PostHeaderIcon What do I substitute Cream of Tartar with?

I have a recipe for homemade playdough. The problem is that is needs cream of tartar–since it isn’t available here. I’ve read about white vinegar and/or lemon juice. Would it work as well in this recipe?

Thanks!
I live in Germany where this is not readily available. I do believe that I can get it, but it is usually imported, which is expensive, or at "foreign" (asian, middle-eastern) markets, and expensive.

I researched it and this is what I found…

    2 cups flour
    2 cups warm water
    1 cup salt
    2 tablespoons vegetable oul
    1 tablespoon cream of tarter…

Then in the recipe I found it says that cream of tartar is optional and it is only used for elasticity. So i say leave out the cream of tartar.

i have tried that once, it did not work,,, just go out and buy it

Baking powder is a good substitute for Cream of Tartar — it is a mixture of Cream of Tartar and Baking soda.
